Bio
Marilyn Narota’s work addresses the uncanny and surreal nature of ingrained social norms - whether in regards to femininity, gender, psychology or immigration. She creates performance based videos, installations and sculptures using familiar objects in an unfamiliar, often surprising, manner. Marilyn became interested in perception and social norms during her work in clinical psychology research. Through art, she continues exploring peculiarities and flaws that reveal uniqueness as well as a common human experience.
Marilyn’s work has been exhibited by El Museo Del Barrio, Periphery Space, Project for Empty Space, The Hole, El Museo de Los Sures, School of Visual Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art and others. She has participated in artist residencies with Fundación’ace and Project for Empty Space. Narota has appeared in panels, talks, symposia, books and periodicals locally and abroad. She also runs Artilade, an online publication and platform, where she supports other artists and their work. An immigrant from Colombia at a young age, she and her family settled in Queens, NY and she later obtained a Bachelors from Williams College and a Masters in Fine Art from School of Visual Arts. Marilyn currently resides in New York City.
